These clients had recently moved into their house which had a large garden with lots of mature trees. Sadly the garden had been neglected in recent years.
The owners had little gardening experience and had no time to spare to work out what they wanted to do with their garden although they knew it needed to encourage wildlife and be easy to care for. They wanted lots of colour and privacy from their neighbours and something that befitted the beautiful setting. They were keen to have plenty of places to sit in the garden and space to entertain friends and family.
Although new to gardening, they wanted to grow their own vegetables so they wanted a kitchen garden and a greenhouse incorporated in the design.
This is the Master Layout Plan for the garden, with the house on the left of the plan. We have added a small terrace in the sunny area beside the back door, making a perfect spot for breakfast or a quick drink outside. Nearby there is the new kitchen garden and the greenhouse. There is a larger terrace with a fire pit positioned to catch the evening sun, which will be perfect for the summer. Further down there is a large terrace large enough for family and friends to share a meal.
At the far end of the garden, on the right, there are some new evergreen shrubs and trees which will provide the extra privacy the owners were looking for. There is also a new wildlife pond and a bench under tree.
The owners wanted a colourful garden so there are colourful plants. Most of them will only need to be cut back once a year. The picture on the right gives an idea of the planting around the fire pit terrace.
What did the owners say?
“Your design process made us really think about how we want to use the garden and get the most out of it for ourselves, not just do something that looks good”
