The owners of this long narrow garden wanted a garden that encouraged them to spend more time outside. They wanted an interesting garden with places to sit in the sun and the shade, plenty of lawn, somewhere to share a meal with family and friends and something to screen the end of the garden, to stop it being overlooked. They wanted an abundant cottage garden feel.
The Master Layout Plan shows how exciting a long narrow garden can be! The shape looks so different with this design and the whole space looks larger. The house is on the left of the plan. Near the house there is a dining terrace large enough for eight people to enjoy a meal. There is a pergola in the corner giving a shady place to sit and the small terrace towards the far end gives somewhere to enjoy some sunshine. The triangular borders are full of cottage garden style plants. At the far end the planting becomes a bit more wild with lots of grasses which will move in the breeze.
What did the owners say?
“I would absolutely recommend you – the price seems very good value. The plans are comprehensive and the whole process is very thoughtful and not rushed. You have an abundance of knowledge and great ideas.”
The owners wanted a colour scheme based around purples, whites and yellows. This was the mood board I used to discuss and explore ideas for the plants that we could use to bring their garden to life. Amongst the plant ideas are a couple of trees that we could use to screen the view at the far end of the garden.
